The Trenches

“It’s the journey that should be the reward, not the destination.”

At times this is a hard thing to get your head wrapped around that the journey is the reward, the time in the trenches!!! Doing the tough training on windy days or late night run sessions, or missing out on going for dinner and 5:00am starts and 9:30 bed times, feeling tired, lost, out of your depth. When you stop and think about it if you have one race or one goal in life that you are working hard on and it’s months or years away how is your life going to be ???? Learn to love the trenches enjoy the tough stuff the sacrifices, thats life, there is also so much positive stuff going on in the trenches if you look for it, we have friends that share the same passions and dreams we have supporters, encouragers, mentors and coaches – make sure you know these people !!! Enjoy the journey!!!

God Bless & Keep Spinning

New members report

From: David Hill

To: AdelaideValesTriathlonClub
Subject: Re: Last weekends event.

Awesome attendance by everyone, made for a wonderful atmosphere and special mention to Lucy for well and truly mixing it with the big guns. Excellent performances also from Britta, Kelly and Brendan who I know from the Saturday rides. Great to see my school mate Ben Finnis – an ironman and the reason I first knew about the existence of the sport of triathlon. Really pleased he is back into it, was interesting that we were only 30 seconds apart, I look forward to future battles.

My 2nd race under the Vales banner, great fun after a horror in the excellently well run Masters games (more than 3mins faster even though swim was 100m longer – I suppose it helps when you swim to the correct buoy!). To try to improve my swim, I attended my first Monday night open water session this week – great training initiative, highly recommend, thanks Phil and Darren. Had my first velodrome experience this morning, good fun and fantastic race (bike/run) training, thanks Darren.

Only saw 2 vales members during the race. I was passed on the bike by Trudy and couldn’t keep up – great ride Trudy. Passed Andrew B on the bike on the 2nd lap which was when I realised how slow my swim was as he started 3 mins after me – huge first up performance Andrew and extraordinary battle with Kerry all the way through.

Bring on the teams event….

Kind Regards,

Melbourne Marathon

Hi Everyone!!!!

Kerry Bridget & Morris have been over in Melbourne running the marathon. This is what info I have so far from Kerry!

Managed to catch up with Bridget in Melbourne, actually ran about 15km with her… Saw her at the finish and she was really happy with a time under four hours.

Didn’t catch up with Maurice unfortunately..

I did a PB, knocking my time down to 3:49. Would have been better except for the cramps at 36 km !!

Some Race Results!

I just received an email from Phil about the Veterans cycling state championships.

Marcus and Trudy, Gatti race directors, have been busy training for their own races and both won their respective age  groups in the state championships!!!!! WELL DONE!!!!

The Veterans cycling is very competitive in South Australia, so for these two to win their age group is a fantastic effort and shows how much work they have been doing in training over the winter!!

stuff

I have not had a rocky quote for a while, hopefully you know some of the characters!!!

Adrian: Einstein flunked out of school, twice.
Paulie: Is that so?
Adrian: Yeah. Beethoven was deaf. Helen Keller was blind. I think Rocky’s got a good chance.

Triathlete’s tend to be people who love to overcome obstacles who love to defy what doctors say to them, what their physio says to them and sometimes their own heads say to them. We have a good chance!!!!

There are some amazing stories in the lives of the people in our sport. great messages of persistence, patience and courage. We have a good chance!!!! getting into this sport is not easy (neither is staying in it), but when you hear the stories of people that have accomplished great things in the sport we can be inspired!! I am not talking about great times and overall finishes but having a go, being willing to put yourself on the start line when its much easier to sit on the couch at home. YOU HAVE A GREAT CHANCE of achieving your goals!!!! Remember it is not so much what you achieve by your goals, as who you become as you achieve them…..

I was lucky enough to spend some time with different people on Monday at the Vales BBQ and to my surprise THREE of our members are venturing over to Melbourne this week to run in the Melbourne Marathon! (there could be more so if you know of them put in a comment). Any one running a marathon is a little crazy but I hope you all have a great time. I THINK YOU HAVE A GOOD CHANCE!!! The three I spoke to are Morris, Bridget and Kerry(who is doing his 3rd Melbourne Marathon) So if you see these guys and girls this week make sure you encourage them and if its next week listen to their stories and be sympathetic to their waddle as they walk!!!

ROCKYtober!!

Well it is the start of October!!! and the Triathlon season is about to kick into gear with the Masters Games event next weekend. So choose today to start training if you haven’t started yet, set some goals for the month of October and the rest of your season NOW!!!

It was a great day today as we unveiled our new Mascot, which I like to call ROCKY but there is still some question as to his name. We had a fantastic BBQ and the opportunity to chat to some of the new members and some of the old ones.

Here are a couple of photos

Last night we had a sensational ergo session!! there were 8 people – working very hard, all new to the sport of triathlon, which is pretty exciting for the future of our club.

The ergo followed by the LARGEST club meeting I think the Vales has ever seen. Great conversation and an excitement about the upcoming season and the places we can take this triathlon club. We have a great team of people sharing the load and there is a real desire to have as many people sharing ideas and participating in the life of the club. So if you have an Idea or a dream DO NOT keep it to yourself share it on the blog site, the website or chat to the president(Darren) OUR NEW VICE PRESIDENT(Ryan Milton) or any one else that knows these guys!!!!!!!

Is there anyone with some free time to help out at the masters games triathlon(October 7th), we are going to need about 18 volunteers to make the race run as smoothly as possible. So if you are under 30 it would be great to get out there and support the club, the wider triathlon community and the sports community as a whole!!!! If you are over 30 and not racing it would be exciting that I am not the oldest person on the volunteer list!!!

God Bless & Keep Spinning

Hi everyone,

Hope you have all recovered from the city to bay OK.

This weekend’s training will be as follows;

Saturday Ride:  Meeting at our normal meeting place – Next Generation Memorial Drive, North Adelaide, but seeing as the weather is on the improve, it will now be an 8am start (not 8:30am). Phil will be heading the ride this weekend. – All ability levels are welcome so please don’t hesitate to come along. We have had several new people join the club through the Ergo sessions and would like to venture out on Saturday mornings and hit the streets of Adelaide( tyres only – no skin) clip in pedals, traffic lights, and cars can be intimidating so we might get a group of riders out at the same time and head down the coast via the linear park track where we can practice getting in and out of pedals for a while before venturing on to the road down by the beach. We can still catch up with everyone for coffee afterwards!!! Let me name some people I expect to see Rano (new bike and all the gear), Olivia and Jo and anyone else who is pretty nervous about starting out, or hasn’t been out for a while. Another thing – Jo is thinking of putting together a link from this site called “Average Jo” and make it a place to share her own experiences getting into this sport and give some hints to make it easier for other newbies, (Tips, hints, fears, adventures and other stuff)- I think its a great idea if you would be interested in seeing something like that put in a comment and get her motivated!!!!! IT IS FANTASTIC SEEING THE GROWTH IN OUR CLUB ESPECIALLY WITH SO MANY NEW FACES TO THE SPORT GIVING IT A GO. Remember to give a word of encouragement to each other – It is a tough sport to start out in, even I remember that and it was over 18 years ago?!?!?

Sunday Run:  Again meeting at 8am at the front of Next generation – Lucy will lead the run this week and will cover about 12km, with the option to turn off early for those that do not want to run that far.  – Kerry and Richard are both in training for longer events, so if you want to run longer, I am sure they will appreciate the company as well.

As of next Friday, we will start a swimming session out of the Unley pool, starting at around 6pm, and a running track session on Thursday nights in the city (stay tuned for details)

Also don’t forget the Monday night Ergo session out of Rosefield Church, Highgate (near Unley) – Bring your running shoes as they are doing small run off the bike each night as well.

Have a great weekend.

This email was prepared by Darren  with lots added by me!!!

God Bless & keep Spinning

Here is some info that I just received about Tonya, she is a member of the club and just had the opportunity to race in the National cross country champs which was held in Perth!!! she finished 20th which is a fantastic result especially considering her injury problems leading up to the event( I added the injury stuff to this little story but I can recall some conversation a couple of weeks ago with her on the bike thinking that she might not even race – unless I am dreaming about Tonya’s injuries????). Any way to wrap up the story she also received a bronze medal for the womens teams event!!!

Fantastic Effort Tonya!!!!!

Its always good to see triathletes doing so well in the separate disciplines!!

Here is the only photo I have of Tonya in action.

By the way Scott Green is competing in Korea tomorrow!! I think it will be on Ironmanlive.com so check it out if you get a chance. Scott is retiring after this one!!! but I have heard people say that before!! would be great to see him with back to back wins!!!

Favorite Races!!

What are your favorite races? International, national or local. What makes it your favorite, is it the course, the organisation or the people that you meet and the volunteers and supporters?

Its a tough decision to make but I think for an overall experience of what Triathlon has to offer ‘Sado Island International Triathlon’ in Japan is awesome!!!!!! the race is tough and is a 4 km swim a 190km bike and a 42.2 km run – it is really hot and humid – The run is through the rice fields and the ride is very hilly – one year the waves were so big they were crashing over the road in one section. I have raced here 5 times and the organising team are amazing – they go out of there way to look after you and stuff like registration and all that jazz was incredibly easy! It is a tough place to get to as far as travel but well worth the visit – Sado Island is old school Japan , Kimonos and tradition enough to blow your senses!!!!!

Are there any members of the club, or wanna be members of the club, planning on or thinking about doing the Busselton Ironman in Western Australia on December the 2nd????

I have started getting my head around trying to prepare for this event, and thinking about this or the Quelle Challenge in New Zealand. I thought it might be good to pool some resources together in terms of accommodation, car hire and all that jazz, and it will give me a list of people to call up to train with, when I don’t feel like it and that have the same thoughts in mind!! the long rides and runs are not really that far away!!

Comment here and then everyone will hold you accountable to the training!!! Com’ on Jeremy!!!!!!!

  • just kidding mate – you enjoy having a life again and getting to know your family and your couch! I tell you its great having you out training thou – Jo loved her run with you guys on Sunday!!!

I will stop rambling now – have a great day

This morning in between rain showers Darren and I were down at Torrens Valley Christian School setting up the very impressive ADELAIDE VALES FINISH LINE for a middle school fun run to celebrate the end of term!!!

darren.jpg

It was a great event for the students and it was great to see the faces on these kids as they had a ball doing the run, walk and the fun after the event!!! Its interesting watching how relaxed they were and there for fun a little different to the stressed out faces and the seriousness we see at some of our triathlons – GREAT REMINDER TO JUST HAVE FUN!!! The

Adelaide Vales out there in the community – Love it !!!

The club just received this email from Lisa about the money raised by the club ergo sessions. If you did not know each week rather than paying for the session we are raising money for some charity or mission, the past two weeks we have been raising money for Lisa’s work place and getting the added benefit of winning prizes! Great to see our efforts on the bike doing something for others as well have a read of Lisa’s letter and check out the website!!

Everyone at Holiday Explorers would like to say a huge thank you to the Adelaide Vales Members who participated in the Australian Central Credit Union Community lottery to raise funds for community organisations. The Monday night ergo riders purchased lottery tickets to the value of $50 which is fantastic. This will result in the full $50 being given to Holiday Explorers to benefit people with intellectual disability.

Holiday Explorers provides supported holidays for people with intellectual disability while at the same time offering respite (a much needed break) for the families and carers while their family member is away. A win-win situation, just like a raffle ticket to pay for your training session – we all like win-wins & winning!

We are a not-for-profit organisation and registered as a charity.

Many of our 650 tourists (clients) would not be able to go on a holiday by themselves or don’t have family or friends able to support them to go away overnight. (Their parents don’t drive, can’t afford to go away as well, or physically can’t provide the assistance, etc). We also offer low cost options for tourists who have limited income.

Our organisation relies heavily on volunteers who are engaged as tour guides to provide the support required. We meet the costs for the volunteers and don’t charge the tourists any extra for the support provided. By traveling in small groups we are able to provide lower cost holidays but still with all the bells & whistles of good quality accommodation, meals, transport and activities. We are the only service of this type in Australia that operates this way, other similar services charge the tourists for the support costs as well, but we don’t think that is fair & equitable.

I usually support 1 or 2 of the more active trips each year. I’m off in a couple of weeks taking a group skiing at Mt Buller. We are staying right in the snow in a great lodge. We’ll be skiing, snow shoeing (I might be able to fit in a training run on snow shoes), tubing, tobogganing – all good fun!

If anyone is interested in finding out more about the type of holidays we do, or if you are interested in being a volunteer for taking people on holidays please check out our website holidayexplorers.com.au

Thanks kindly again

Lisa

Hi,

BLAZEMAN press here to go to the link

Just wanted to add this link to the site today – it’s about the passing of the “Blazeman” – John Blais, who suffered from Lou Gehrig’s disease (a motor neuron degenerative disease) with very high mortality – John was diagnosed in May 2005. Steph and I met him very briefly (I didn’t know who he was at the time) at the carbo party of the 05 Ironman – he gave Steph a free ticket to get in- this was to be John’s last Triathlon and you can see him finishing by rolling across the line on the Hawaii 05 video.

From this link you can go to his website – and read some of his poetry etc which is really inspiring – as quoted on his site –

“The Bold may not live very long, but the timid never live at all”

……..Get out there a do it.

Darren

There is now a link to Blazeman’s site on the right hand column of this page as    “als warrior poet”!
